The Outsiders for my generation, Boyz N the Hood tells the tale of three young black men growing up and trying to survive in South Central LA during the height of gang related homicide rates and all amidst the crack epidemic.The late great director, John Singleton (RIP), became the youngest to be nominated for an Academy Award for Best Director and probably would’ve won if it wasn’t for Jonathan Demme and his Silence of the Lambs.
The film stars Laurence Fishbourne as Furious Styles (my favorite on-screen dad ever), Angela Bassett, Cuba Gooding Jr, Morris Chestnut, Nia Long, Regina King, and the one and only Ice Cube who steals every scene as Doughboy, the highly intelligent crack dealing murderer with a heart of gold and a much conflicting conscious.
